Tuberville’s bill restricting transgender athletes in women’s sports heads to Senate floor

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Senate will move forward with the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, sponsored by U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., next week.

The procedural vote is scheduled for Monday night. The bill would prohibit schools that receive federal funding from allowing transgender athletes to participate in girls’ or women’s sports. Tuberville has been pushing for Senate Majority Leader John Thune to bring it to the floor. The legislation is a hallmark issue for Tuberville and Republicans.

“It’s time to restore Title IX protections and save women’s sports,” Tuberville said on the Senate floor recently.

Sen. Katie Britt, R-Ala., is a co-sponsor of the legislation. President Donald Trump signed an executive order in early February barring transgender athletes from competing in girls’ and women’s sports. Since future presidents can overturn executive orders, Tuberville is sponsoring the legislation to make the restriction permanent.

The House passed similar legislation last month, with two Democrats voting for it. Alabama’s Congressional delegation voted along party lines.

Republicans would need seven Senate Democrats to vote for it to advance the bill.

Tuberville posted on X asking every senator to vote for the bill to “protect women and girls everywhere.”
