A special GOP primary election in Alabama House 12 in Cullman County appears to require a runoff, according to unofficial results Tuesday.
Cindy Myrex received 49.81% of the vote in the four-candidate contest, followed by Clint Hollingsworth with 43.24%, according to the Alabama Secretary of State’s office.
Provisional ballots will be counted next week and assuming they don’t significantly alter results, a special runoff will be Aug. 12.
Candidates Heather Doyle and Dan McWhorter each received less than 4% of the vote. Turnout was 12.37%.
“We want to thank all the candidates for a well-run race and their dedication to public service,” said Jeannie Burniston, Alabama Republican Party director of legislative affairs and communications. “It is a significant sacrifice to serve, and we respect everyone who wishes to contribute to making our communities a better place. House District 12 is a solidly Republican seat—President Donald J. Trump won nearly 90% of the vote in Cullman County—and the Alabama Republican Party is committed to keeping it in conservative hands. We look forward to working with the eventual winner to protect our shared values.”
The special general election is Oct. 28 and Matthew Glover is the Democratic nominee.
The special election is needed to replace Republican Corey Harbison, who resigned in April.
