Republican Heath Allbright is the newest member of the Alabama House of Representatives after winning 88.4% of the votes in a House District 11 special general election Tuesday, according to unofficial results.
He defeated Democrat Alex Braswell for the seat representing portions of Cullman and Blount counties. Allbright won a May GOP primary with 54% of the vote.
Allbright, of Holly Pond, is a former two-term Cullman County Board of Education member and owns a timber harvesting and reforestation company.
“I want to congratulate Heath Allbright on his strong victory tonight,” ALGOP Chairman John Wahl said in a written statement Tuesday evening. “Heath has proven himself to be a conservative leader, a man of faith, and a fighter for Alabama families. I know he will bring that same dedication to the State House as he works to defend our freedoms, protect our values, and ensure that the voices of the people are always put first.”
The seat was previously held by Republican Randall Shedd, who stepped down in February to work in Senate President Pro Tem Garlan Gudger’s office.
Turnout Tuesday for the special election was 8.8%. There were also municipal elections across the state the same day.
