Mitchell campaign releases polling showing him leading AG race

Recent polling conducted for Alabama Attorney General candidate Jay Mitchell shows him leading the GOP primary field, but most voters are still undecided 11 weeks from the election.

The survey by 1892 Polling asked 638 likely Republican voters who they would vote for, Mitchell’s campaign told ADN.

Twelve percent said Mitchell, the former Alabama Supreme Court associate justice; 9% said Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey and 6% said Katherine Robertson, chief counsel to current AG Steve Marshall.

And 74% of voters undecided.

These results are slightly better for Mitchell than mid-December polling published in January.

In releasing the data, Mitchell’s campaign noted it has spent significantly less than Robertson so far in the campaign.

According to the most recent campaign finance reports filed this year, Mitchell and Robertson are neck-and-neck in funds received, her $3.25 million to Mitchell’s $3.23 million. Robertson has spent about $1.18 million to date, while  Mitchell has spent $588,851.

“Katherine Robertson has burned through over a million dollars and landed in third place,” Mitchell said in a statement to ADN. “That’s not momentum—that’s backfire. Alabama voters aren’t buying what she’s selling.”

Other recent polling reported in January by Yellowhammer News showed Robertson only one percentage point behind Mitchell’s 9% favorability.

Asked for a comment on Mitchell’s polling, Dalton Dismukes, Robertson’s general consultant, dismissed the numbers.

“If Jay Mitchell believed these numbers, he likely wouldn’t be running a campaign with no platform other than to criticize Katherine Robertson.”

Mitchell has attacked much of Robertson’s fundraising, including about $1.7 million from out-of-state non-profit political organizations. Robertson’s campaign has said the contributions show her support among conservative groups.

The primary is May 19.
