Mitchell leads AG candidate fundraising

The GOP contest for Alabama attorney general, an open seat in 2026, is shaping up to be one of the most competitive, and expensive, contests on the ballot.

Former Alabama Supreme Court Associate Justice Jay Mitchell raised about $405,000 July, including a $100,000 contribution from the Business Council of Alabama’s Progress PAC. The PAC endorsed Mitchell last month.

Katherine Robertson raised nearly $89,000 last month, according to a report filed by the Monday deadline. Her campaign on Tuesday said it would be amending the report to reflect checks received late because of a shipping error. She has raised $250,000 since July 1, the campaign said. That includes a $100,000 contribution reported Monday from First Principles Action, Inc., a non-profit in Nashville run by the former executive director of the Republican Attorneys General Association. In June, Robertson received $1 million from the organization.

In a statement Tuesday, Mitchell’s campaign said the vast majority of his donors are from within the state, “while his opponent’s campaign is funded almost entirely from more than $1 million of out-of-state dark money.”

“I’m energized by such strong early support and proud to report that nearly every single dollar raised in July is from the state of Alabama,” Mitchell said in a written statement.

Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey ended July with nearly $90,000 on hand. She had a $20,000 donation from Traditions Bank in Cullman.

Mitchell resigned from his court seat earlier this year to run for AG. Robertson has been current AG Steve Marshall’s chief counsel most of his tenure. He is term limited.

Mitchell has about $1.63 million on hand and Robertson has $1.25 million, according to the latest campaign finance numbers. Robertton’s number will be updated when her campaign amends its report.

Robertson spent about $162,000 last month; Mitchell spent about $59,000.

There is no Democrat candidate fundraising. The primary is May 19.
