Shooting at a party in Montgomery leaves 13 injured, officials say

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — A shooting at a crowded party in Alabama’s capital left 13 people injured — nine of whom were shot, officials said Sunday. Four other people were injured in the subsequent chaos.

Mayor Steven L. Reed said in a statement that police and medics responded to reports of gunshot victims at 1:46 a.m. Sunday.

“This morning, more than 300 rounds were fired at a crowded party in the North Pass area,” Reed said. “Nine were wounded, and at least four more were injured in the chaos that followed.”

The Montgomery Advertiser reported the gunfire broke out at an unpermitted street party with more than 1,000 people. A social media post showed at least one shot being fired into the air, then an eruption of shooting from multiple types of weapons that lasted about two minutes as crowds ran and people took cover. Rapid semi-automatic gunfire can be heard, and several strings of apparent automatic gunfire can be heard.

He said officers from the Montgomery Police Department, the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are interviewing witnesses and suspects.

None of the injuries were life-threatening.

District 2 Montgomery City Councilwoman Julie Turner Beard released her own statement.

“… This wave of criminality is not just an assault on the peace and safety of our neighborhoods, but an affront to the very essence of our community values,” the councilwoman said. “Let me be clear: these acts of violence are intolerable and unacceptable. They are perpetrated by individuals who have no regard for human life, no respect for the law, and no consideration for the suffering they inflict on innocent families and communities. The residents of Montgomery deserve better.

“We deserve to live in a city where our children can play in parks without fear, where businesses can thrive without the threat of vandalism, and where every person can walk the streets with a sense of safety and security.”
