MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Katherine Robertson has surged into a clear lead in the Republican race to become the state’s next attorney general, according to a new Cygnal poll commissioned by Alabama Daily News and Gray Television.
In a survey of likely Republican primary voters, 26.9% said they would choose Robertson if the election was held today. Former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Jay Mitchell was next with 14.4%, followed by Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey at 11.2%.
A plurality of voters – 46.5% – said they remain undecided.
Robertson leads with all demographic groups but is strongest with men under 65 at 30% of the vote. Her strongest region is a tie between Montgomery and Mobile at 32% vote share each.
Mitchell is strongest with men over the age of 65 with 18% of that vote. His strongest region is the Huntsville area where he’s polling at 17%.
Casey also polls her best among men over 65 at 13%. Her best region is Huntsville where she polls at 14%.
The survey of 500 likely Republican primary voters was conducted April 29 and 30. It has a margin of error of +/- 4.4%.
Cygnal pollster John Rogers noted Robertson’s climb in the recent survey.
“Katherine Robertson has a clear edge in the AG’s race—among the most engaged, 4/4 primary voters, her vote share equals that of Casey’s and Mitchell’s combined,” he told ADN. “It’s still likely headed to a runoff, but Robertson is going to be tough to beat, given her appeal to both Trump and traditional Republicans.”
The primary is set for May 19.
