MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Wes Allen has opened up a slight lead in the crowded field for lieutenant governor but the race remains wide open, according to a new Cygnal poll commissioned by Alabama Daily News and Gray Television stations.
In a survey of likely Republican primary voters, 18.1% said they would choose Allen, the current secretary of state, if the election was held today. Former Alabama Republican Party Chairman John Wahl was next with 12.9%, followed by Nicole Wadsworth Jones at 4% and Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries Rick Pate with 3.6%.
A full 54% of voters said they remain undecided.
The survey of 500 likely Republican primary voters was conducted April 29 and 30. It has a margin of error of +/- 4.4%.
Looking at the crosstabs, Allen’s strongest demographic is men over 65, where he has 24% of the vote. His strongest region is the Huntsville area, where he commands 23% of the vote.
Wahl’s strongest demographic is women over the age of 65, of which he has 21% of the vote. His strongest region is the Mobile area, where he sits with 23% of the vote.
