Nelson, Dixon head to GOP runoff in HD38

Two Republicans are headed to a runoff in the Alabama House District 38 special election.

Kristen Nelson received 46.69% of Tuesday’s vote, to Garrett Dixon’s 33.28%, according to unofficial results from the Alabama Secretary of State.

Micah Messer finished third with 20.03%.

The district includes portions of Lee and Chambers counties and was previously held by Republican Debbie Wood, who moved out of the area earlier this year when her husband’s job relocated.

Nelson and Dixon now move to a Nov. 18 runoff. The winner will be on a Feb. 3 general election ballot with Democrat Hazel Floyd.

Voter turnout was 6.85%, according to the secretary of state.

Dixon has led fundraising so far, taking in about $55,700 and spending nearly $49,900. Nelson has raised $23,155 and spent more than $21,000, according to the latest campaign finance information. They have $12,787 and $13,261, respectively, heading into the runoff.

“We congratulate all three candidates for a strong and spirited campaign. Today’s results reflect the continued engagement of Republican voters in east Alabama,” Alabama Republican Party Chief of Staff Shannon Whitt said in a written statement. “The upcoming runoff on Nov. 18 will allow voters to select the nominee who will best represent their values and serve their community with dedication.”
