Republican Cindy Myrex won Tuesday’s special primary runoff for Alabama House District 12, according to unofficial results.
Myrex received 3,048 votes, 58.5%, to Cullman City Councilman Clint Hollingsworth’s 2,160, or 41.4%.
Myrex, a real estate agent and lifelong resident of Cullman County, led the June primary voting in a four-candidate field with 49.81% of the vote.
The special general election is Oct. 28 and Matthew Glover is the Democratic nominee.
In her campaign materials, Myrex highlighted her support for President Donald Trump, gun rights and law enforcement and other first responders. She pledged to oppose diversity, equity and inclusion efforts and “the groomer trans agenda on children, schools, and society.”
Myrex said she was the only candidate to oppose from the beginning a large proposed resort development in Cullman County. Senate President Pro Tem Garlan Gudger, R-Cullman, recently said he’d move to repeal next year legislation approved this year to help create the resort. Hollingsworth spent nearly $165,000 on the race, according to campaign finance information available Tuesday morning. Myrex spent about $120,000.
Her supporters included the Alabama Farmers Federation’s Farm PAC.
“When our local Federation members are united, they’re hard to beat,” Federation Organization Department Director Matthew Durdin said in a written statement. “But it also takes a candidate who will put in the work, listen to constituents and serve with integrity. Cindy Myrex earned the support of the Farmers Federation and voters by showing she’s willing to work hard every day for the people of Cullman County.”
Voter turnout in the race was 15%, according to the Alabama Secretary of State’s office.
The special election is needed to replace Republican Corey Harbison, who resigned in April.
