Hurst: A strong defense budget means a strong Alabama

In Alabama, we don’t cut corners—and we don’t gamble with our future. Folks here understand the value of hard work, straight talk, and making decisions that actually stand the test of time. That’s exactly the mindset we need when it comes to national defense.

From my perspective as a state legislator, President Trump’s proposed FY2027 defense budget is about getting back to basics: strength, stability, and smart investments. It’s about putting resources where they matter now so we’re not paying a far higher price later—both in dollars and in security.

I’ve spent years working alongside Alabama’s job creators and small businesses, and I’ve seen firsthand how critical our defense and aerospace industries are to this state. And when you talk about that impact, you can’t ignore Northrop Grumman.

Northrop Grumman isn’t just a name on a building—it’s a cornerstone of Alabama’s defense economy. The company supports more than 14,000 jobs across our state, providing high-skill, high-paying careers that allow families to put down roots and build a future. Its work generates roughly $4.2 billion in annual economic output in Alabama alone. That kind of impact doesn’t just show up in Huntsville—it’s felt in communities all across the state.

And it goes deeper than that. Through a network of more than 146 suppliers across Alabama, Northrop Grumman helps sustain small businesses and local economies that depend on steady, predictable work. When defense investments are strong, those businesses grow, hire, and invest. When they’re not, the consequences ripple quickly—and painfully—through our communities.

Alabama’s leadership in defense didn’t happen overnight. It was built over decades, starting with the space race and continuing today with companies like Northrop Grumman helping push the boundaries of what’s possible, including supporting missions that send astronauts beyond Earth’s orbit. That legacy is something worth protecting.

But this isn’t just about economics—it’s about national security. Our adversaries are moving fast, investing heavily in their own capabilities, and looking for ways to challenge the United States at every turn. Falling behind isn’t an option.

Talk to the men and women who rely on the equipment built here in Alabama, and they’ll tell you what matters: systems that work, intelligence they can trust, and the ability to respond without hesitation. The work being done by Northrop Grumman and others across our state helps deliver exactly that.

The FY2027 defense budget supports those priorities. It ensures our troops are paid and equipped, invests in modernization, and strengthens the industrial base that makes it all possible.

From where I sit, supporting this budget isn’t about politics, it’s about responsibility. It means standing up for American strength, standing up for Alabama workers, and making sure we’re prepared for whatever challenges lie ahead.
