Mitchell gets BCA endorsement in AG race

The Business Council of Alabama’s political action committee this week endorsed Jay Mitchell for attorney general in 2026.

ProgressPAC’s endorsement of the former Alabama high court associate justice comes more than 10 months ahead of the GOP primary in what is expected to be one of the more competitive state races.

“Jay Mitchell has consistently demonstrated a deep understanding of the rule of law. He has been a proven ally of Alabama’s job creators and a committed defender of the free enterprise system,” Helena Duncan, president and chief executive officer of the BCA, said in a written statement. “We’ve worked closely with Jay over the years, previously endorsing him in his two campaigns for the Alabama Supreme Court, and are confident in his ability to lead as our next Attorney General.”

Mitchell faces Katherine Robertson, who is chief counsel to Steve Marshall, the current term-limited Attorney General, and Pamela Casey, the district attorney in Blount County.

So far, both Mitchell and Robertson have put about $1.25 million in their campaign accounts, according to state records. Mitchell’s came from a mix of donations and unspent funds from his last supreme court contest. Robertson reported an eye-catching $1 million donation from a conservative judicial group last month.

The BCA’s endorsement is one of the most coveted in state-level races. Last year, the organization pledged to be a major player in the 2026 election cycle.

In its endorsement announcement, the BCA cited Mitchell’s previous private-practice work representing companies and knowledge about the legal and regulatory challenges they face.

“All three candidates bring remarkable talent, conservative credentials, and strong records of service to the table,” said Gary Smith, chairman of ProgressPAC. “Our decision to endorse Jay Mitchell is grounded in our longstanding relationship with him and our belief that his judicial temperament, legal expertise, and leadership style make him uniquely qualified to take on this critical role at a critical time.”
