MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Two new U.S. attorneys for Alabama have been sworn into office after having been nominated by the president and confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
Phil Williams was sworn in as U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama, the largest of the state’s three districts spanning 31 counties and including Birmingham and Huntsville.
Williams, a military veteran who served two terms in the Alabama Senate, called the appointment “an incredible honor.”
“I am deeply grateful for my God equipping me for this day, and I appreciate President Trump and the members of the Senate who have made this dream a reality. I look forward to serving my state and nation as U.S. Attorney and pledge that I will do all that is possible to ensure that justice is applied fairly and consistently.”

Govan is a career prosecutor, most recently serving as Chief of the Criminal Trials Division in the Alabama Attorney General’s Office. Govan also served in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps officer in the United States Air Force Reserve with the rank of Major.
“I am honored by the trust placed in me to serve as the United States Attorney for the Middle District of Alabama,” Govan said. “I look forward to working alongside our outstanding federal, state, and local law enforcement partners to uphold the rule of law, protect our communities, and faithfully serve the people of this district.”
The chief judges of the districts presided in the swearing in ceremonies. Northern District Chief Judge Madeline H. Haikala administered the oath of office to Williams and Middle District Chief Judge R. Austin Huffaker, Jr. did the honors for Govan.
