Wes Allen gets BCA endorsement in lieutenant governor race

Republican candidate for Alabama lieutenant governor Wes Allen received another major endorsement Friday.

The Business Council of Alabama’s ProgressPAC put its support behind the current secretary of state and former Alabama House member.

“Wes Allen understands that efficient government and a strong business climate go hand in hand,” said ProgressPAC Chairman Kevin Savoy. “As Secretary of State, he implemented key reforms like improving election security, reducing bureaucratic red tape, and cutting unnecessary spending. We are confident that he will bring similar pro-business, results-oriented leadership as Lieutenant Governor.”

The BCA said its endorsement is based on Allen’s work to strengthen election integrity while reducing unnecessary red tape for businesses and candidates across the state.

“Wes Allen has proven himself to be a principled elected official and a steady leader,” BCA President and CEO Helena Duncan said. “His commitment to accountability, fiscal discipline, and limited government will serve Alabama well as Lieutenant Governor.”

Other major groups endorsing Allen so far include the Alabama Farmers Federation, Manufacture Alabama and the Alabama Forestry Association

Allen is leading fundraising among the five Republicans reporting campaign contributions since last spring. As of earlier this month, he had more than $1 million on hand.  Current Alabama Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries ended December with about $594,000 on hand. Each man has spent nearly $100,000 so far.

Nicole Wadsworth, Dean Odle and Patrick Stewart are also fundraising. Party qualifying ends Jan. 23. Wadsworth was the first to file her paperwork.

Pate’s endorsements to date have included a coalition of business owners and leaders, the Alabama Grocers Association and Associated General Contractors.

Democrat Phillip Ensler, a first-term House member, announced his candidacy for the seat last month.

Primaries are May 19.
