Second-term U.S. Rep. Dale Strong, R-Huntsville, is expected to serve on the House Appropriations Committee when Congress begins its new term next month.
“It’s past time we put America first,” Strong said in a written statement. “Those that serve on this committee are not seeking to be popular and are willing to take the tough votes to save America for future generations. Chairman Tom Cole understands the changes that must be made, and I am honored to serve alongside him.”
Cole, a Republican from Oklahoma, said he looks forward to working with Strong.
“His leadership in local government and lifelong commitment to public service uniquely position him for this role,” Cole said. “I believe he will be a valuable asset to the Committee as we work to restore conservative ideals and responsibly fund the federal government.”
Strong and four other Republicans have been nominated to the appropriations committee by the Republican Steering Committee. They replace outgoing members, including Rep. Jerry Carl, R-Mobile.
The powerful appropriations committee has significant influence over federal spending. It oversees all discretionary spending and reviews how federal tax dollars are spent.
“Alabama has a decades-spanning history of powerful service on the Appropriations Committee. This assignment ensures our state’s historical influence on how federal dollars are spent continues,” Strong said.
Other new GOP members nominated are: Rep. Mark Alford of Missouri, Rep. Nick LaLota of New York, Rep. Celeste Maloy of Utah and Rep. Riley Moore of West Virginia.
The House Republican Conference will formally ratify the Steering Committee’s recommendations in the coming days.
