MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall is running for U.S. Senate in 2026.
Marshall on Thursday released a video announcing his bid to succeed U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., who is leaving the Senate to run for governor.
Asked about his run for Senate, Marshall told Alabama Daily News he is eager to leverage his career as a prosecutor to make an impact in Washington.
“It’s been the honor of a lifetime to serve as your Attorney General,” Marshall said in a statement to Alabama Daily News. “We’ve taken bold action and gotten things done for Alabama and our country — from standing strong against the overreach and woke policies of the Biden Administration to standing with President Trump to defend our values.”
“Today, I’m announcing my candidacy for the United States Senate to continue that fight and get things done for Alabama. That means continuing to work alongside President Trump to finish the job of making America Great Again by securing our border, making our communities safer, protecting our children, getting the economy going and making sure that more of Alabamians hard earned money stays in their pockets. I want to thank Senator Tuberville for his dedication and Service in the Senate, he leaves tremendous shoes to fill. I look forward to building on that legacy and carry Alabama’s voice forward in Washington.”
Marshall’s first campaign ad is titled “Alabama Strong,” and highlights his commitment to safety and close ties to President Donald Trump.
“We have fought the fights that had to be fought for the people of Alabama,” Marshall said in the ad.
The ad features Trump speaking at the University of Alabama and highlights instances when the president mentioned the attorney general in his speeches, underscoring Marshall’s connections to Trump as he begins his campaign.
Marshall is sure to focus on public safety, the border and law enforcement in his campaign, issues he has spent his time working on as the state attorney general.
Marshall is term limited in his current role, serving more than two terms. He was appointed attorney general in 2017 by Gov. Robert Bentley. Marshall easily won GOP primaries and general elections in 2018 and 2022 to keep the office.
Marshall, 60, was district attorney in Marshall County for four terms prior to his AG appointment.
On his state webpage, Marshall touts his work on a variety of issues.
“He has been at the forefront of efforts to protect children from irreversible gender-altering medical procedures, preserve fairness in women’s sports, defend election integrity, combat the opioid epidemic, fight human trafficking, and uphold the rule of law and the rights of states in matters of border security and immigration enforcement,” it says. “He is also a strong advocate for religious liberty and has consistently championed constitutional principles in courts across the country.”
He was considered last year to be a possible 2026 gubernatorial candidate, but he put an end to that speculation late in the year.
The 2026 primary is May 19. The Alabama Republican Party has not set a qualifying deadline for 2026, but it will likely be toward the end of the year.
