Former District Judge Spiro Cheriogotis is the mayor-elect in Mobile after defeating Alabama Rep. Barbara Drummond in Tuesday’s runoff.
Cheriogotis won with about 51.4% of the vote, according to unofficial results from Fox 10.
Drummond and Cheriogotis were the frontrunners in a crowded August primary in the nonpartisan contest.
“Thank you for every Mobilian who put your trust in me and in this campaign,” Cheriogotis said Tuesday night, according to al.com‘s John Sharp reported.
“From the very beginning, we said that this will be a campaign for Mobilians run by Mobilians. Tonight, the people of Mobile have spoken.”
Cheriogotis raised more than $1.7 million in the campaign. Drummond took in more than $580,000.
Cheriogotis will take office in early November, replacing three-term leader Sandy Simpson. Simpson did not seek reelection.
