Special election set in Alabama HD38

Gov. Kay Ivey has set special election dates for Alabama House District 38 previously held by Republican Debbie Wood.

The special primary election is Oct. 21; the special primary runoff, if necessary, will be Nov. 18; and the special general election is Feb. 3, a few weeks after the Legislate starts its 2026 session.

Wood, elected in 2018, resigned last month because her husband recently got a new job in the Florida panhandle. They will live in Alabama near the Florida line.

District 38 includes parts of Chambers and Lee counties.

“Representative Debbie Wood has been a dedicated leader for the people of House District 38, and her commitment to Alabama is commendable,” Ivey said in a written statement. “As she embarks on this new chapter, I am confident the district will elect a leader who will continue to serve with the same passion and integrity. I encourage every voter to participate in this important special election.”

The deadline for qualifying with major political parties is Aug. 20, 2025. The deadline for all independent candidates or minor parties is Oct. 21, 2025.

House District 38 is one of five currently vacant seats in the 140-member chamber.
