Gov. Kay Ivey on Monday set a special election for Alabama House District 11 in north Alabama.
The special election is needed to replace former Rep. Randall Shedd, R-Fairview, who resigned from the House last week to join President Pro Tem Garlan Gudger’s staff.
The special primary election is May 13; the special primary runoff, if needed, will be June 10. The general election is Aug. 26.
The district includes portions of Cullman and Blount counties.
Republican Heath Allbright announced his bid for the seat soon after the special election announcement.
Allbright, of Holly Pond, is a former two-term Cullman County Board of Education member and owns a timber harvesting and reforestation company.
“I am running for Alabama House District 11 because I believe in the strength and potential of our community,” Allbright said in a press release. “As a lifelong resident of Cullman County, I have seen firsthand the challenges we face and the opportunities we can seize. I am ready to work with the people to ensure our district thrives– supporting families, schools and businesses while preserving the values that make District 11 home.”
Allbright’s key priorities include increasing education funding, protecting Alabamians’ constitutional rights and promoting job creation through support for small businesses and infrastructure development.
The deadline for qualifying with major political parties is March 11. The deadline for independent candidates or minor parties is May 13.
