Senate GOP Leader, NRSC chair back Moore for U.S. Senate

WASHINGTON — Senate Majority Leader John Thune and National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman Tim Scott endorsed Rep. Barry Moore for Alabama’s open U.S. Senate seat on Tuesday.

The move shows the GOP wants to unify behind the congressman as he readies for a crowded Republican primary to replace Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., who is running for Alabama governor.

“Barry Moore has been a strong conservative voice for the people of Alabama, and I know he’ll bring that same commitment as we work to pass our shared Republican agenda in the Senate,” Thune, R-S.D., said in a statement. “I’m proud to endorse Barry in his race to become the next U.S. Senator from Alabama.”

President Donald Trump endorsed Moore, the Republican from Enterprise, earlier this year. Moore has also picked up numerous other endorsements throughout the campaign, including from Vice President JD Vance, Turning Point Action and U.S. Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark.

Moore is running against Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall, former Navy SEAL Jared Hudson, and businessman Rodney Walker, among others, in the Republican primary.

Chairman of the NRSC, Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, said Moore has been a “strong, conservative champion for Alabama and President Trump’s agenda.”

“His tireless fight for common sense is exactly what Alabama expects from their next U.S. Senator, and I look forward to working with him to secure prosperity for the next generation,” Scott said in a statement.

The primary is May 19.
