Alabama is moving in the right direction, with new opportunities emerging that position our state to strengthen and grow our economy in meaningful ways. More Alabamians are earning college degrees than ever before, while industries such as advanced manufacturing, agriculture, aerospace, defense, and automotive production continue to expand their footprint across our state. In parallel, innovative small businesses are growing in both urban centers and rural communities alike.
In recent years, Alabama has done an excellent job attracting large-scale investment from companies across the country and around the globe. These projects create thousands of jobs, bring new energy into local communities, and demonstrate that Alabama can compete – and win – on the national and international stage. These investments matter, and they deserve to be celebrated.
But as we continue to recruit major employers, we must also ensure we are not overlooking the small businesses and startups that form the backbone of our economy. A truly strong and resilient economy is not built solely on marquee announcements and ribbon cuttings, it is built when entrepreneurs have the tools they need to grow an idea into a viable business, create jobs locally, and put down roots in the communities they call home.
As former U.S. Secretary of State and Alabama native Condoleezza Rice recently said at the Innovate Alabama summit in Birmingham, “You need to create the circumstances in which the innovators, the entrepreneurs, the people who will be bringing the ideas will be a part of the Alabama ecosystem, and feel that they are not just welcome here, but supported here.”
That is why Innovate Alabama is so important to our state’s economic future.
Innovate Alabama was created with a clear goal: to help Alabama compete by supporting small businesses and startups, particularly those led by young, enterprising entrepreneurs who might otherwise take their ideas and their talent elsewhere for better opportunities. Access to private equity is more limited in Alabama than in some other states, so many are forced to move out of Alabama when they otherwise would have preferred to stay. With limited resources, Innovate Alabama has focused on making strategic investments that unlock far greater private capital, allowing promising companies to scale and succeed here at home.
This approach matters now more than ever. Alabama’s universities are producing record numbers of graduates each year. These are bright, motivated students ready to build careers and chase big ideas. Too often, however, those graduates feel their best opportunities to start a business exist outside our borders, in places like Atlanta, Nashville, or beyond. When that happens, Alabama loses not only talent, but the return on the investment taxpayers made in educating those individuals.
Innovate Alabama is working to change that dynamic by creating an environment where students and young entrepreneurs can see a future for themselves here – where starting a business in Alabama is not a disadvantage, but a competitive opportunity.
This mission is especially critical in rural and underserved communities in Alabama. Innovation and entrepreneurship cannot be confined to a handful of major metro areas. Small towns and rural communities have talent, ideas, and ambition, but they often lack access to capital, networks, and early-stage support. Innovate Alabama is focused on closing that gap, ensuring that opportunity reaches every corner of the state and that rural entrepreneurs have a real chance to succeed without having to leave home.
Innovate Alabama is about creating the conditions for success by connecting entrepreneurs to capital, mentorship, and workforce pipelines so that the free market can do what it does best. Not every startup will succeed, but some will grow into employers of dozens or even hundreds of Alabamians. When that happens, the benefits ripple outward, strengthening communities and creating a self-sustaining cycle of growth.
Alabama has momentum. We are attracting major employers, producing a skilled workforce, and building an economy with real potential for long-term success. To fully realize that future, we must continue to invest not only in large projects, but in the innovators and small businesses that will define the next chapter of Alabama’s growth.
Innovate Alabama helps ensure that progress reaches every community – and that the future of Alabama is built right here at home.
