New committee assignments in Alabama Senate

Alabama Senate leaders on Thursday announced some new committee assignments, including Sen. April Weaver, R-Brierfield, as chair of the Confirmations Committee.

Sen. Sam Givhan, R-Huntsville, and Keith Kelley, R-Anniston, also received new assignments.

The changes are a result of former Senate Majority Leader Clay Scofield last month resigning from the body and Sen. Steve Livingston, R-Scottsboro, taking that leadership role.

Weaver has served in the Senate since 2021 and was previously a member of the Alabama House of Representatives.

“The men and women who come before the Senate Confirmations Committee will serve on boards and commissions that affect the lives of millions of Alabamians,” Weaver said in a written statement. “Our committee must ensure that the individuals we confirm are qualified, committed, and represent the values of Alabama and its citizens, and it is a responsibility that I take seriously.”

Livingston previously led that committee.

Givhan will serve on the Senate education budget committee. He was already on the General Fund budget committee.

“I look forward to the opportunity to help shape both of our budgets,” Givhan said in a written statement. “It is important that we continue with responsible budgets that provide practical solutions for Alabama’s future. I am excited about serving in this new capacity and know that we will continue working hard to make Alabama the best place to raise a family.”

Kelley will serve on the Rules Committee, which decides the order of bills the Senate considers.

“I am honored to be appointed to the rules committee and appreciate the confidence placed in me,” Kelley said. “I take this responsibility very seriously and look forward to working alongside the chairman in accomplishing much success in the upcoming session.”

Senate President Pro tem Greg Reed, R-Jasper, said he is grateful for the senators’ willingness to serve and he looks forward “to the work we are doing to continue making Alabama the best place in the country to call home.”
