New ACHE board members from Tuscaloosa, Decatur

The Alabama Commission on Higher Education board has two new members this year.

Shane Spiller of Tuscaloosa and Terry Welch of Decatur were appointed to ACHE by Gov. Kay Ivey and confirmed this spring by the Alabama Senate.

Spiller’s term will expire in 2029, and Welch’s term will expire in 2031, according to their appointment letters. In the letters, Ivey said honesty and integrity are important values for her administration and the two appointees express those qualities.

“As one of my appointees, you will be making important decisions that directly affect the citizens of Alabama,” Ivey wrote in Spiller’s letter. “I have made honesty and integrity a priority in my administration, and I know that you will embody these two virtues while serving the people of Alabama.”

Spiller has been the president of Spiller Associated Furniture Stores, Inc. since 2004, according to ACHE social media. He received a Bachelor’s degree in management from the University of Alabama.

Welch is Chief Business Development Officer with Contractor Service & Fabrication, Inc., according to ACHE social media. He received a Bachelor’s degree in engineering from Lamar University and an M.B.A. from Thunderbird University.

“I encourage you to be a good steward of the taxpayers’ money, and work to maintain the trust that I, and the people of Alabama, have in you,” Ivey wrote in Welch’s letter. “You are a servant of the people of Alabama, and I trust that you will fulfill your duties and set a standard for others to follow.”

The 12-person ACHE board is the coordinating body for public institutions of higher education.
