Moore defeats Carl in AL-1

U.S. Rep. Barry Moore, R-Enterprise, will likely have a new district by his name in his third term in Congress.

With 51.7% of the vote, according to unofficial results Tuesday night, Moore defeated fellow GOP incumbent Jerry Carl Tuesday to represent Alabama Congressional District 1 in south Alabama

The two were forced into a rare incumbent duel when the state’s congressional districts were redrawn last fall. Moore currently represents Congressional District 2, but both districts were significantly changed and Moore now resides in District 1.

Carl had raised nearly $2 million for the race, as of mid-February and had more than $500,000 going into the last three weeks of campaigning. Moore had spent a bit less than $1 million.

“We’ve always been grassroots, we’ve always been outspent, I’ve never been in a race where I had more money than the other guy, but nobody ever outworked us,” Moore told Alabama Daily News. “So I think it was grassroots, having a good record to run on, a good message to put out, and a lot of prayer and effort from our volunteers.”

District 1 was stretched from the southwest corner of the state across the lower counties to the Georgia line. It became more white in the federal court’s effort to increase the number of black voters in District 2.

Moore could have run for his current seat again, but in December told Alabama Daily News he didn’t think he was politically aligned with the new District 2 and opted for District 1.

“I think for us, the district went from the 75th most-conservative to the sixth-most conservative district in the nation, and I’m certainly the most conservative member from Alabama in Congress,” he said Tuesday night.

Moore still faces Democrat Tom Holmes on the Nov. 5 ballot.
