Mobile County schools honor 30-plus cadets at Military Signing Day

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Mobile County schools recently honored more than 30 Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) cadets during its Military Signing Day, recognizing seniors from nine high schools who plan to enlist in the armed forces or accept full or partial ROTC scholarships to colleges and universities.

The ceremony, held at the district’s central office in west Mobile, celebrated students committing to military service as well as those pursuing officer training through ROTC programs.

Representatives from all four branches of the U.S. military took part in the event, which concluded with a flag-folding ceremony. Each student received a medal and certificate.

“This ceremony is about recognizing commitment,” said retired Army Lt. Col. Chevelle Thomas, Mobile County schools’ director of Army instruction.

“JROTC prepares students to be better citizens by exposing them to multiple post-secondary pathways – college and university education, trade and technical careers, military service across all branches, and meaningful civilian careers.”

In addition to their military commitments, most of the cadets honored are expected to graduate with a credential in government and public administration, reflecting what district leaders described as their understanding of civic responsibility, public service and leadership.
