Mitchell announces Alabama Supreme Court reelection bid

Alabama Supreme Court Justice Jay Mitchell is seeking a second term in 2024, he announced this week.

“The people of Alabama deserve a Supreme Court that is committed to upholding the Constitution and the rule of law,” Mitchell said in a written campaign announcement. “I am seeking reelection to ensure our court has a strong conservative majority and protects the freedom and prosperity we enjoy in our home state.”

The former partner with Maynard, Cooper & Gale in Birmingham was first elected in 2018. His first-term achievements on the bench include writing a concurrence pointing out flaws in Roe v. Wade before it was overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court last year, according to the press release.

Five of the nine Alabama Supreme Court seats are up for election in 2024, including the open seat of Chief Justice Tom Parker, who has aged out of running again under an Alabama law that bars judges over the age of 70 from seeking additional terms.

So far, Associate Justice Sarah Stewart and lawyer and former state senator Bryan Taylor are running chief justice.

Criminal Appeals Judge Chris McCool is running to replace Stewart for Supreme Court Place 7.

Justice Will Sellers, first appointed in 2017, is running for a Place 4 reelection bid. Justice Tommy Bryan, on the bench since 2012, announced his reelection campaign for Place 2 last year.

Primary elections are March 5, 2024.
