HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama man has been convicted of capital murder in the 2013 slayings of his wife and 7-year-old son.
News outlets report 39-year-old Stephen Marc Stone was found guilty Tuesday of strangling 32-year-old Krista Stone and Zachary Stone. Prosecutors say they’ll seek the death penalty in the trial’s sentencing phase that begins Wednesday.
Authorities said Stone drove their two daughters to his parent’s home and called police to report the killings.
Stone’s attorney Larry Marsili pursued an insanity defense, saying the dispute was what was going on in Stone’s mind when he killed his wife and son.
Madison County prosecutor Tim Gann says it wasn’t an insane compulsion, and that Stone’s marriage issues and anger were the motive.
Marsili says the defense team’s goal is to save Stone from the death penalty.
