Alabama voters in state Senate District 5 will be selecting a new senator this spring.
Gov. Kay Ivey this week set a special election schedule to replace four-term Sen. Greg Reed, R-Jasper. The Senate President Pro Tem the last four years, Reed announced in November he was leaving the Legislature at the end of the year to serve as Ivey’s senior advisor on workforce transformation.
Depending on the number of candidates and their parties, a new senator may not be seated until the 2025 legislative session is over in May.
A special primary will take place March 11. If needed, a primary runoff is set for April 8. The special general election is June 24.
“Senator Reed has been an outstanding partner as president pro tem of the Senate and will continue to be an integral leader in the state of Alabama, but he has left big shoes to fill in the state legislature,” Ivey said in a written statement Tuesday. “Greg has effectively represented his district and I encourage the folks in Senate District Five to get out and vote during this special election.”
The deadline for qualifying with major political parties is 5 p.m. Jan. 7. The deadline for all independent candidates and minor parties is 5 p.m. March 11.
