MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Gov. Kay Ivey is encouraging Alabamians to take advantage of this weekend’s sales tax holiday right in time for back-to-school shopping.
“Alabama families, it’s that time of year again! With the upcoming school year just around the corner, I encourage everyone to take full advantage of our Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday,” Ivey said in a written statement.
“This is an opportunity to save on essential school supplies, and ensure our students are well-prepared and excited to learn.”
The sales tax holiday was enacted in 2006, and allows for Alabamians to purchase an array of school-related items with no state sales tax. Though not mandated, local municipalities may opt to join the state in not levying any local sales tax on school-related items.
A majority of Alabama municipalities have opted to exempt local sales tax during the holiday. A complete list of participating municipalities may be viewed here. Depending on the city, some Alabamians pay as much at 11% in combined local and state sales tax.
Eligible items include pencils, paper, binder, calculators, computers, and many more items related to education. A full list of eligible items may be viewed here.
“This is tax relief at the perfect time for parents as they prepare for a new school year,” said Alabama Department of Revenue Commissioner Vernon Barnett Monday in a statement.
“Many counties, cities and towns are participating as well, so we encourage everyone in Alabama to take advantage of this tax-free opportunity.”
The sales tax holiday begins Friday at 12:01 a.m. and ends at 12:01 a.m. Monday.
