Caroleene Dobson clinches GOP nomination in Alabama secretary of state race

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Republican Caroleene Dobson sailed to an easy victory and clinched the Republican nomination for Alabama secretary of state on Tuesday night.

Dobson, an attorney, earned 286,914 votes, or 65.5%, as of Wednesday afternoon. 

She defeated Christopher Christian Horn and Glenda Jackson to earn the nomination. Horn won 99,108 votes, or 22.6%. Jackson earned 52,173 votes, or 11.9%.

Democrat Wayne Rogers, a political organizer and former federal prosecutor, was unopposed in the Democratic primary. Rogers and Dobson will face off in November in the general election.

Current Secretary of State Wes Allen is running for lieutenant governor and secured a spot in the runoff on Tuesday.

Dobson took to social media to thank her supporters on Wednesday morning.

“Alabama, thank you for putting your trust in me to be your next Secretary of State,” Dobson said. “I am grateful for every vote, every prayer, every word of encouragement, and to each of you who opened your homes, shared your stories, and stood with us along the way. On to November!”

Headed into the general election, Dobson has a war chest of $599,300. She spent $581,600 over the course of her primary campaign.

Dobson is backed by the Alabama Farmers Federation and the Business Council of Alabama, two powerful groups with deep pockets. 

Rodgers has $13,500 on hand. He has spent $16,000 so far in the race.

The general election is Nov. 3.
