BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama State Superintendent Eric Mackey was elected president of the Council of Chief State School Officers at its annual policy forum in Phoenix, Ariz., on Tuesday.
“I am deeply honored to be chosen as president-elect of CCSSO’s Board of Directors,” Mackey said in a news release. “This is a pivotal time in education, and I am eager to work alongside my colleagues to ensure every student has access to a high-quality education. Together, we will focus on addressing academic recovery, supporting educators, and modernizing our education systems to meet the needs of today’s learners.
My motto in Alabama is Every Child, Every Chance, Every Day. I look to extend that philosophy to this important work that serves America’s students.”

Mackey succeeds outgoing President Kirstin Baesler, North Dakota’s superintendent. Washington Superintendent Chris Reykdal is now president-elect.
Council Chief Executive Officer Carissa Moffat Miller praised Mackey and the newly elected board members for their leadership.
“State education leaders play an integral role in ensuring our students achieve academic success and prepared for college, careers and life,” she said.
CCSSO is a nonpartisan organization representing leaders of K-12 state systems nationwide. The group provides advocacy and technical assistance on key education issues.
