AL-2 poll shows Figures with slight lead as many remain undecided

Recent polling in the Alabama Congressional District 2 race shows a tight general election race with Democrat Shomari Figures having a slight advantage over Republican Caroleene Dobson.

The survey for the Alabama Families Political Action Committee, a group supporting Dobson in the race, showed 37% of respondents in the newly drawn district favoring Figures of Mobile and 33.86% favoring Dobson of Montgomery. Twenty-nine percent of respondents were undecided more than four months from the general election.

About 28% of those interviewed indicated they had a favorable or very favorable opinion of Dobson while 38.88% said they had a favorable or very favorable opinion of Figures. Figures also had higher name recognition at 68.46% compared to Dobson’s nearly 50%.

The central and south Alabama district was redrawn last year by a federal court to create a second district in the state where Black voters have an opportunity to elect a candidate of their choice.  While election data suggests the district leans Democratic now, political science experts suggest the district is still very much in play, ADN previously reported.

“Voters in Alabama’s Second Congressional District are clear in their desire to elect the candidate with the clearest plan on the border and on matters relating to the economy,” Dalton Dismukes, executive director of Alabama Families PAC, said in a statement Friday. “Caroleene Dobson is not only clearly defining herself as the candidate bringing solutions to problems, but her strides are becoming more and more evident with key voting groups in this district.”

The survey was conducted July 22 through July 24 by Strategy Management, LCC through a mix of text and live telephone interviews. About 55% of respondents were Democrats, 45% were Republicans.

According to campaign finance reports through June, Figures’ campaign had $301,948 in cash on hand and had spent $248,258 during the second quarter of 2024 and $584,224 in total. Dobson had $471,813 in cash on hand, had spent $542,988 during the second quarter, and spent $1.73 million in total on the contest.
