MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Construction workers affixed Gov. Kay Ivey’s name to the state office building at 501 Washington Ave. in Montgomery Wednesday morning.
Located southwest of the Capitol, the previously unnamed building houses the attorney general’s office. Lawmakers renamed it in April through a joint resolution of the Legislature to honor Ivey, the state’s longest continuously serving governor. She took office in 2017 after former Gov. Robert Bentley resigned.
Ivey’s name will also appear on a 4,000-bed men’s prison currently under construction in Elmore County. The Alabama Department of Corrections had previously estimated the facility would open in October, but the department told Alabama Daily News earlier this month that there’s a chance construction might not be completed by its deadline.
