WASHINGTON — An internal Democratic poll shows U.S. Rep. Shomari Figures, D-Mobile, and State Rep. Rhett Marques, R-Enterprise, in a dead heat for Alabama’s newly redrawn 2nd Congressional District.
The survey, conducted by Democratic pollster IMPACT Research, found Marques at 45% and Figures at 44%.
Alabama implemented a new congressional map more favorable to Republicans after the Supreme Court scaled back the Voting Rights Act’s impact on redistricting earlier this year.
The poll surveyed 400 likely voters from June 22-25. National Journal first reported the findings. Figures is unopposed in the Democratic primary.
In the Aug. 11 special election, Marques is running in a crowded Republican field, facing off against Hampton Harris, Christian Horn, David Matthews, Joshua McKee and James Richardson.
But Marques is the clear frontrunner in the race, with the backing of President Donald Trump, U.S. Sen. Katie Britt and several prominent Alabama groups.

Though the new 2nd District favors Republicans, Figures and Democrats are planning to put up a strong fight to try and keep the seat blue in this year’s general election. The district would have voted for President Donald Trump by 14 points in the 2024 election.
Recently, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee added Figures to its 2026 Frontline Incumbents list, which comes with significant resources to bolster the congressman’s campaign.
