Alabama Hospitals: Stronger because of you

As National Hospital Week comes to a close, it is important to pause and recognize one of the most important institutions in every Alabama community: our hospitals.

From the largest urban medical centers to rural community hospitals, Alabama’s hospitals are there for us during the moments that matter most. They are there when a child spikes a high fever in the middle of the night, when a family faces a cancer diagnosis, when a trauma patient arrives after a devastating accident, and when diagnostic screenings and wellness programs are available to keep us healthy. Quality, compassionate care close to home matters.

Hospitals are more than buildings. They are people.

They are the nurses who stay late after their shift ends because a patient needs reassurance. They are the physicians making life-saving decisions in emergency rooms and operating suites. They are respiratory therapists, lab professionals, environmental services staff, pharmacists, imaging technicians, food service workers, administrators, EMS personnel, and countless others whose work often goes unseen but is absolutely essential.

Every day, Alabama hospitals operate in an increasingly difficult environment. They face rising labor costs, workforce shortages, inflation, aging infrastructure, cybersecurity threats, and reimbursement systems that often fail to reflect the true cost of delivering care — especially in rural communities.

And yet, despite these challenges, Alabama hospitals continue to answer the call.

Across our state, hospitals are investing in new technologies, expanding access to specialty care, strengthening quality and patient safety efforts, improving behavioral health services, and working collaboratively to meet the growing health needs of their communities. They are leading efforts in maternal health, workforce development, infection prevention, telehealth expansion, and rural care transformation.

Importantly, hospitals are also economic anchors for Alabama. They are a fundamental part of our state’s infrastructure.

In many communities, the local hospital is one of the largest employers and among the most significant drivers of economic activity. Hospitals create jobs, support local businesses, attract physicians and industry, and help communities grow and thrive. A strong healthcare system is essential not only to public health, but also to economic development and Alabama’s future competitiveness.

What makes Alabama hospitals especially remarkable is their resilience and mission-driven commitment to care.

Hospitals care for everyone who comes through their doors — regardless of ability to pay, background, or circumstance. That commitment is rooted deeply in the values of service and compassion that define healthcare professionals across our state.

This National Hospital Week, I encourage every Alabamian to take a moment to thank the healthcare workers and hospitals serving their communities.

Their work is demanding. Their sacrifices are real. But their impact is immeasurable.

On behalf of the Alabama Hospital Association, thank you to Alabama’s hospitals and the dedicated men and women who serve patients every day with skill, compassion, and unwavering commitment.

Alabama is stronger because of you.

Danne Howard is President and CEO of the Alabama Hospital Association.
