A message from the Alabama Policy Institute
Prior to the 2024 regular session, API released its BluePrint for Alabama, a 30-point conservative policy plan backed by Guides to the Issues for each issue. The Blueprint was divided into categories based on API’s three pillars: free markets, limited government, and strong families. The 2024 BluePrint was embraced by many allies in the Alabama House and Senate Chambers. Of the 30 proposals, 25 were considered by at least one chamber. Of those 25, 17 of API’s BluePrint priorities were successful, including stopping the expansion of gambling and Medicaid expansion and passing universal school choice.
Building on the successes of the 2024 session, API will release a 2025 BluePrint for Alabama this December. Over the past several months, API staff, interns, and fellows have been identifying key issues that should be addressed in 2025. In doing so we have examined best practices of neighboring states, received input from national groups, and heard directly from Alabama lawmakers on their priorities and aspirations.
API has identified 15 proposals from the 2024 BluePrint that we plan to pursue again in 2025. These include major reforms as well as other important issues including Certificate of Need reform, tax and budget reforms, expanding healthcare freedom, and protecting minors from exposure to inappropriate materials, both in public and online.
In addition to the 15 existing policy proposals, we have identified 15 new priorities that will be included in the 2025 BluePrint for Alabama. New proposals will include issues such as strengthening the state’s unemployment requirements to better incentivize Alabamians to actively seek employment, bringing more scrutiny and transparency to the states regulatory and budgeting processes, ensuring certain protections in public spaces, criminal justice reforms, and allowing medical patients with few remaining healthcare options to pursue innovative and potentially life-saving treatment, among others.
We have carefully selected the list to provide balance between fiscal and social issues, as well as to lay the groundwork for policies that may take more than one legislative session to achieve. We believe that, together, we can continue to build upon the successes of the 2024 BluePrint. Our mission is to improve the lives of Alabamians through public policy and API is poised to have a significant impact on the 2025 legislative process.
