WASHINGTON — Progress is coming for the I-10 Mobile River Bridge and Bayway Project with a federal funding disbursement and construction update announced Tuesday.
The U.S Department of Transportation said it will release the $550 million federal grant that was awarded to the project last year for the construction of the Mobile River Bridge and Bayway multimodal project. The grant is the largest in a USDOT package of 180 infrastructure projects that Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy approved for disbursement Tuesday.
“We appreciate the commitment for Secretary Duffy and the Trump administration to expedite the completion of the funding process for the $550 million grant for the Mobile River Bridge,” Tony Harris, Alabama Department of Transportation spokesman, said in a statement.
“With this commitment, this is another positive step toward the completion of the Mobile River Bridge and Bayway Project.”
U.S. Rep. Shomari Figures, D-Mobile, pointed out in a statement that the grant was initially awarded in 2024 under the Biden administration.
“It’s unfortunate that this funding was delayed because of President Trump’s funding freeze, but I’m glad to see this money is finally flowing to Mobile so that the I-10 Bayway Bridge Project can get underway,” Figures said in a statement.
The department of transportation also said Tuesday that Kiewit Massman Traylor will remain the joint venture team overseeing, which was previously working on designing and building the bridge portion of the project.
“This is an important and positive development for the Mobile River Bridge and Bayway project,” Ed Austin, ALDOT Chief Engineer, said in a statement. “Kiewit Massman Traylor and their team are hitting the ground running as they take over this portion of the project.”
The KMT team will begin a pile load test this month to evaluate the strength and stability of the concrete foundation that will support the new structures. The tests will happen at six sites on the bridge route. Traffic is not expected to be impacted on Interstate 10 during testing.
A groundbreaking could occur by the end of the year, ALDOT said.
