More than 325 Alabama cities and counties will participate in the state’s 18th annual back-to-school sales tax holiday July 21-23, according to a press release from the Alabama Retail Association.
From 12:01 a.m. on Friday, July 21, until midnight on Sunday, July 23, the state will waive its 4% sales tax on certain items. Most of the participating cities and counties will also waive their local sales tax. These items include: Clothing less than $100 per article; school supplies valued at $50 or less per item; books less than $30; and tablets, laptops, computers and printers less than $750.
Retail association President Rick Brown said the holiday weekend is all about stimulating sales and saving money.
“The sales tax holiday offers parents a way to save on back-to-school needs,” Brown said. “Saving money for consumers while stimulating sales for stores is what this weekend is all about.”
While school-related items are the only exempt from sales tax, anybody can purchase these items with the discount, according to the release. A list of participating and non participating counties and cities can be found here.
