A special election for a north Alabama House seat has been set for later this year, Gov. Kay Ivey’s office announced Tuesday.

The special election in House District 13 is needed to replace Republican Matt Woods, who last month became the newest member of the Alabama Senate in another special contest. The district is in Walker County.

“We are proud to now have Matt Woods in the Alabama Senate, and I know he will continue to serve his community and the state of Alabama with great commitment,” Ivey said in a written statement. “The people of House District 13 have an important choice ahead in this special election, and I encourage all voters to participate and help ensure their district continues to have strong, effective representation.”

The special primary election is Sept. 30. If needed, a primary runoff will happen Oct. 28. The special general election is Jan. 13.

Those are the same dates as a special election in Tuscaloosa County.

The 2026 legislative session starts Jan. 13 and the newly elected members could begin serving in Montgomery that week.
