A special election has been set in Alabama House District 27 in Marshall County, the seat vacated by Wes Kitchens, R-Arab, when he was elected to the State Senate earlier this month.
“I commend Sen. Wes Kitchens for his exemplary service in the House, and as he ascends to the Senate, I am calling for a special election to fill the vacancy,” Gov. Kay Ivey said Wednesday when announcing the special election. “It is essential we ensure District 27 continues to have strong representation. I urge everyone in this district to make their voice heard by voting in the upcoming special election. Alabamians deserve to be rightfully represented in the Alabama Legislature.”
The special primary election is April 2. A special primary runoff, if necessary, is set for April 30. The general election is July 16.
The deadline for qualifying with major political parties is Tuesday at 5 p.m. The deadline for all independent candidates or those from minor parties is April 2 at 5 p.m.
Three Republicans have already said they are running in the district that includes Arab, Guntersville, Union Grove and Grant.
