Sheriff: Man accused in slaying shoots self when confronted

LEEDS, Ala. (AP) — Authorities in Alabama say a man suspected in the slaying of his girlfriend shot himself when confronted by law enforcement.

News outlets report 39-year-old George Darrell Heath shot himself Monday when authorities attempted to pull him over in a traffic stop. St. Clair County Assistant Sheriff Billy Murray says deputies received a report of a possible shooting in Leeds early Monday. Responding authorities found 36-year-old Barbara Posey shot to death in the couple’s shared home. Their children were not home.

Authorities say neighbors reported the couple had a volatile relationship and an investigation led to an arrest warrant for Heath. A sheriff’s office statement says Heath was found near the Alabama-Georgia line and authorities attempted to conduct a traffic stop when he shot himself.
