The Senate on Tuesday approved House Bill 404 to allow student athletes at Alabama institutions of higher education to be compensated whenever their name, image or likeness is used in promotional material.
Sponsor Rep. Kyle South, R-Fayette, said he wanted to make sure Alabama has procedures in place when the National Collegiate Athletic Association gives a final vote on their own compensation rules.
The bill also establishes a commission to provide rules and recommendations on matters related to name, image and likeness issues. Sen. Kirk Hatcher, D-Montgomery, who has his own student-athlete compensation bill, amended South’s bill to make that commission to seven members.
Because of that amendment, the bill was sent back to the House for agreement.
