MONTGOMERY, Ala. — U.S. Rep. Barry Moore said he anticipates a “difficult time for this country” in the coming months and years, whether Donald Trump or Kamala Harris win the upcoming presidential election.
“Even if Trump wins with the right policies in place, we’re looking at a difficult time for this country,” Moore told the well over one hundred people at a Montgomery Chamber of Commerce event Wednesday morning.
“No matter who wins, it’s going to take us some time.”
Moore named several domestic and international factors that he argued would see civil unrest persist in the United States, regardless of if Trump, of which Moore is a strong supporter of, takes the White House in November.
These factors were only exacerbated, he argued, due to increased government spending.
“Folks, we don’t have a revenue problem in Washington, D.C., we’ve got a spending problem,” he said.
Alabama Daily News asked Moore what he would like to see done to bring down spending, to which he suggested cuts to “green New Deal initiatives.”
“A lot of these green initiatives are not driven by the economics, they’re driven by some social programs, mandates from some, maybe global group,” he told ADN.
“We really need to focus on the fact that that money is wasted, I mean we saw this: $8 billion for seven charging stations. There’s areas we can cut, and I don’t think the American people will even know the difference.”
Congress did approve $7.5 billion for the construction of EV charging stations as part of the 2021 Infrastructure Act, which had produced seven charging stations in two years, as reported by The Washington Post, something Trump has cited frequently in criticizing President Joe Biden’s administration.
However, that $7.5 billion is expected to fund the construction of thousands of more EV charging stations, with 61 constructed as of mid-August, and 14,900 more currently in development, including many in Alabama.
As to the country experiencing a difficult time, even with his preferred candidate winning in November, Moore said that the state of affairs across the globe had simply grown too dire.
“The $35 trillion in debt, the $100,000 a second in interest, you’ve got Iran flexing their muscle pretty heavy in the Middle East right now, you’ve got China rattling sabers toward Taiwan, and you’ve got Russia invaded Ukraine,” Moore told ADN.
“All of this has happened in the last 36 months, so there’s no way anybody – I don’t care how good of a leader they are – can turn that (around) that fast.”
Moore also noted the domestic issues he believes Trump will face if elected.
“There’s going to be civil unrest, we’re going to have to couple that with the media not always being fair to the man, and then our adversaries around the globe,” he told ADN.
“(And) this border, it’s going to take some time to round up nine or ten million people and get the border secure. A lot to do in a short period of time.”
