Proposed abortion ban to get Senate vote next week

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — State senators are expected to debate Alabama’s proposed abortion ban next week.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Cam Ward said the panel will vote Wednesday following a public hearing. Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh said he anticipates the bill being before senators Thursday.

The bill would make it a felony to perform an abortion. It contains an exemption for the mother’s health but not rape and incest.

The bill’s sponsor acknowledges the ban would be struck down by lower courts, but said the goal is to spark a case that could prompt the U.S. Supreme Court to revisit the 1973 decision that legalized abortion.

Opponents say the legal fight will cost money that could be spent on other needs.

The House of Representatives approved the bill on a 74-3 vote.
