Inflation and the cost of living is the top concern of likely general election voters, according to a recent poll of Alabamians.
The poll by Cygnal conducted for Alabama Daily News and Gray Television surveyed 616 likely general election voters Oct. 27 – 29, 2022.
Asked what they think should be elected leaders top priority and given 10 response choices, 34.1% said inflation/cost of living.
The second most population response was a woman’s right to choose abortion, 14.6%.
Looking closer at the responses, 44% of Republicans polled said inflation and cost of living were their top priorities. Only 1% of GOP voters ranked the abortion issue first. Among Democrats, 15% ranked living costs as the top concerns while 42% said abortion access.
Decades-high inflation has made the U.S. dollar worth about 8% less than it was a year ago, the Associated Press reported this week.
Elective abortion access in Alabama, and many other states, stopped after the June U.S. Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade. Under Alabama’s 2019 law, it is a felony to perform an abortion at any stage of pregnancy. There is an exception for the health of the mother. There are no exceptions for rape or incest.
- Other priorities for the likely voters were:
- Economy/jobs: 9.5%
- Election integrity: 8.4%
- Public education: 8%
- Illegal immigration/border security: 7.3%
- Crime/public safety: 6.2%
- Health care: 5.5%
- Gun rights/Second Amendment: 3.8%
The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.94%. Registered voters were interviewed via interactive voice response and text message.
