MONTGOMERY – Alabama Speaker of the House Mac McCutcheon (R – Monrovia) announced that the House will hold a “Small Business Day” in the chamber on Tuesday, February 20, with a work calendar that is stacked with bills designed to help small businesses thrive, grow, and provide needed jobs.
A resolution recognizing the work of the Alabama Small Business Commission, which serves as the voice of small business owners by recommending needed reforms in rules, regulations, and state law, will also be presented to the commission members in the chamber.
“Mega-projects may get the headlines, but small businesses provide the vast majority of jobs, hope, and opportunity across Alabama,“ McCutcheon said. “The men and women who operate small businesses risk their savings, their investments, and their sweat equity to keep Alabama’s economy healthy and moving forward, and I believe it is time for the House to formally recognize their efforts and sacrifices.”
Representatives from the National Federation of Independent Business and other small business groups are expected to be in attendance throughout the day
Among the bills on the House agenda, which were requested by small businesses owners and associations, are:
House Bill 107 by State Rep. Paul Lee (R – Dothan) would mandate that a business license is not required for a person traveling through a municipality on business if the person is not operating a branch office or conducting business in the area.
House Bill 182 by State Rep. Steve McMillan (R – Bay Minette) expands the authority of the Home Builders Licensure Board and makes adjustments to the law governing home builders.
House Bill 242 by State Rep. David Sessions (R- Grand Bay) would expand the state sales tax exemption for the sale of fruit and other agricultural products.
