Forbes: Alabama’s port second fastest growing in US

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Port of Mobile is the second fastest growing port in the U.S. over the last decade, according to new analysis published by Forbes this week.

The analysis included all ports of entry, including international airports and border crossings.

Ken Roberts, a trade policy and data analyst, reported that the Port of Mobile experienced 122% growth in both imports and exports. That was second only to “energy-exporting powerhouse” Port of Corpus Christi Texas, which saw 238% growth.

Ranking below Mobile were Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.

Alabama Port Authority Director and CEO John Driscoll said the ranking shows Alabama’s port is on the move with more growth yet to come.

“From Mobile to Huntsville, Alabama’s economy is booming, and the port is proud to be a key player in this growth,” Driscoll said in a statement. “With over $1 billion in capital investments planned over the next ten years and the benefits of major projects such as the deepening and widening of the ship channel yet to be realized, the sky is the limit for what the port and the State of Alabama will accomplish in the coming years.”

According to Roberts’ analysis, the Port of Mobile’s leading imports are oil (17%), auto parts (8.5%) and aircraft parts (6.5%).
