By TODD STACY, Alabama Daily News

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – A new Alabama Daily News poll of Republican voters shows Gov. Kay Ivey with a high approval rating and a big lead over potential opponents in her bid for reelection in 2022.

More than 60% of Republican primary voters say they approve of the way Ivey is handling her job as governor, while 28.3% say they disapprove. In corresponding numbers, 61.5% said that things in Alabama were headed in the right direction while 25.1% say they are on the wrong track.

Voters considering themselves “Very Conservative” were most likely to approve of Ivey’s job performance at 66.8% while those considering themselves “Moderate” were most likely to disapprove at 40.8%.

In a ballot test of the race for governor with potential candidates included, Ivey carried 41.5% while no other candidate was in double digits. A full 33.9% said they remained undecided nine months out of the GOP primary scheduled for May 24, 2022.

The survey also showed the race for the Republican nomination for Alabama Supreme Court is wide open, with 12.9% saying they would vote for Greg Cook, 7.6% saying they would vote for Deborah Jones, 8.7% saying they preferred another candidate and 70.8% saying they are undecided.

The survey, commissioned by Alabama Daily News and conducted by Cygnal, took place August 17-18 among 600 likely Republican primary voters and has a margin of error of +/- 4.0%.  Known registered voters were interviewed via live phone calls, interactive voice response and text message invitation in Cygnal’s multi-mode survey method.
