Congressional candidate forums planned for February

Montgomery area voters will have opportunities to hear from Republican and Democrat candidates for Congress at separate forums next month.

The seven Republican candidates for the newly drawn Second Congressional District are expected to participate in a candidate forum at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 15 at the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association. The Montgomery County Republican Executive Committee and the Capital City Young Republicans are hosting the forum where the candidates can engage with their potential voters.

Eleven Democrats are running for their party’s nomination for the seat in the March 5 primary.

The Southern Poverty Law Center Action Fund is holding a forum at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 20 at the Civil Rights Memorial Center in Montgomery. Candidate participation for that event will be determined by measurable support through qualifying public polling and fundraising metrics, organizers said.

Montgomery County is one of the population centers of the court-drawn district that also includes part of Mobile County and portions of the Wiregrass and Black Belt.

The seat is open this year because District 2’s current House member, Rep. Barry Moore, R-Enterprise, was drawn into District 1.

Black residents comprise about 48.7% of the voting-age population of the new district designed to give Black voters in the state a second district in which to potentially elect the candidate of their choice.
