Former U.S. Rep. Jerry Carl handily won the Republican nomination on Tuesday for Alabama’s newly redrawn 1st Congressional District, defeating three opponents.
Carl, who President Donald Trump endorsed, secured about 75% of the special primary vote, according to unofficial election results. Air Force veteran Austin Sidwell and former Navy pilot John Mills came in second and third places, respectively. Lucas Burger ended in last place.
“I look forward to taking the fight to the socialist Democrats this November and serving alongside a fantastic delegation that puts America First,” Carl said on social media. “We are just getting started, and together, I believe the best is yet to come.”
The newly redrawn 1st District encompasses Mobile, Baldwin, Escambia and most of Covington County. It is solidly Republican, according to the Cook Political Report. So Carl is on track to return to Congress after losing the 2024 primary under a court-drawn map to U.S. Rep. Barry Moore, R-Enterprise, who is now running for U.S. Senate. The current 1st District spans from Mobile to the Wiregrass.
The Supreme Court allowed Alabama to use its Republican-friendly 2023 congressional map in this year’s elections after the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act.
Carl will face Democrat Clyde W. Jones, Jr. in the general election. Jones was unopposed in the Democratic primary.
The general election is Nov. 3.
